The Federal Government has expressed strong support for the World Bank’s contributions to women’s economic empowerment in Nigeria. The World Bank’s women Empowerment program had a huge promise in supporting women empowerment programs. During the Gender Innovations in Economic Planning event, held as part of the 2024 Joint Planning Board (JPB) and National Council on Development Planning (NCDP) meetings in Lafia, Dr. Vitalis Obi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, emphasized the importance of gender-inclusive planning to drive national economic growth.

Gender-Inclusive Policies for Economic Growth

Dr. Obi noted that empowering women through access to finance, especially via digital tools, and promoting gender-responsive policies will not only improve women’s social well-being but also foster more prosperous and resilient societies. He stressed that both men and women need to be active participants in decision-making processes to ensure sustainable development.

Integrating Gender in Economic Planning

The Federal Permanent Secretary highlighted that economic planning, if designed with a gender-responsive approach, can enhance economic outcomes. Integrating gender-focused strategies into budgeting and policy frameworks will ensure that all citizens benefit equally from national prosperity.

The Role of Gender-Specific Data

Dr. Plangsat Dayil, director of the Development Research and Project Centre (dRPC), called on policymakers to incorporate gender-specific data into their planning processes. This, she said, is crucial for creating policies that truly reflect the needs and opportunities of women in the economy.

Leverage World Bank’s Support

Prof. Jerome Andohol, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning in Benue State, also emphasized the need to maximize the interventions provided by the World Bank and other partners. He encouraged collaboration between federal and state governments to build on these initiatives for greater economic inclusion.

Conclusion

The World Bank’s focus on women’s economic empowerment has earned well-deserved recognition from the Federal Government. As these initiatives continue to grow, their impact on the economy and society will only strengthen.
