Rolac

RoLAC, funded by the European Union, has partnered with the Child Protection Network (CPN) to reinforce child rights at the grassroots level in Lagos State. This initiative aims to strengthen the Child Rights Implementation Committee across all local government areas to ensure the safety and welfare of children. By collaborating with ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), RoLAC focuses on creating effective systems that uphold children’s rights and protect them from harm.

Addressing Challenges to Implement the Child Rights Law

RoLAC recognizes that the lack of adequate funding has hindered the full implementation of the Child Rights Law. CPN Coordinator, Mrs. Ronke Oyelakin, emphasized the importance of local governments taking ownership of these efforts to make a meaningful impact. She reiterated that protecting children from violence requires collaborative action and resources at every level of governance.

RoLAC’s Commitment to Building Capacity Through Training

The re-inauguration of child rights committees began with training sessions in Ikorodu and Lagos Island. These sessions aim to empower stakeholders, including state and non-state actors, to implement the Child Rights Law effectively. RoLAC is committed to supporting these efforts by providing training to committees across key areas, ensuring stakeholders are equipped to uphold and advocate for the rights of children.

Promoting a Safe Environment for Children

Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa of the Ministry of Local Government urged the committees to push for legal reforms and policy changes that challenge harmful cultural practices. She called for continuous collaboration between local governments and the committees to foster an environment where children feel safe and empowered. By addressing societal norms, RoLAC and its partners aim to create long-term solutions to protect children’s rights.

Strengthening Justice Systems Through RoLAC’s Framework

The Lagos State Child Rights Law, first enacted in 2015, provides the foundation for RoLAC’s work. Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, highlighted the existing legal structures, such as the Directorate of Citizens Rights and the Citizens Mediation Centre, which are crucial to safeguarding children’s rights. He encouraged the committees to complement these efforts by handling cases with fairness and prioritizing the best interests of children.

Expanding Child Rights Protections Across Lagos

Honourable Wasiu Ayodeji Adesina, Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, expressed unwavering commitment to protecting children’s rights. He emphasized that children, as a significant part of the population, must be educated about their rights and protected at every level. RoLAC’s initiative is set to expand through similar efforts in other local governments, including Ikeja, Shomolu, and Ajeromi-Ifelodun, to ensure all children benefit from these reforms.

Conclusion

RoLAC’s efforts to re-establish child rights committees in Lagos highlight a critical step in creating safer communities for children. These initiatives demonstrate the power of collaboration between government agencies, local authorities, and civil organizations. For more resources on child rights advocacy, visit Genderpedia.
