Women-Led Political Movement

Efforts to amplify women’s participation in politics have taken center stage in Cross River State. Led by Hon. Edema Iron, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, female politicians insist on special consideration for women in leadership roles to address the country’s male-dominated political landscape. This advocacy was emphasized during a Town Hall meeting in Calabar titled “Amplifying Women’s Representation in Politics: Special Focus on the Special Seats Bill.” She did it to build a strong women-led political movement.

Advocating for Women-Led Political Inclusion

Hon. Edema Iron highlighted the Ministry’s collaboration with the NGO “Stand to End Rape” to promote women’s political representation. The partnership aims to address systemic barriers that hinder women from accessing leadership opportunities. The Commissioner stressed that creating inclusive policies will provide women with the platform to contribute effectively to national development.

She encouraged participants to debate the Special Seats Bill, designed to promote political inclusion and empower women to take on leadership roles.

Supporting the Special Seats Bill

Elprida Adeleye, coordinator of “Stand to End Rape,” emphasized the Bill’s significance in addressing gender disparities in politics. She pointed out the evolution of advocacy efforts, from seeking 25% to 35% affirmative action, to now calling for designated political seats for women. This approach aims to balance representation in decision-making processes.

Adeleye highlighted the ongoing advocacy campaigns across states to garner nationwide support for the Bill. She believes that these efforts will encourage Nigerians to back the initiative, fostering widespread participation from women in governance.

Time-Bound Provisions for Long-Term Impact

Hussein Mohammed, Program Officer of “Stand to End Rape,” clarified that the Bill is intended to last for 16 years. This timeframe aims to institutionalize gender inclusivity while allowing for gradual societal acceptance of women’s roles in politics.

Mohammed believes this temporary measure will catalyze long-term shifts in political structures, ensuring that women can seamlessly transition into leadership positions.

A Call to Action for Political Equity

The Town Hall meeting reinforced the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve political equity. With continued advocacy and public support, Nigeria can create a more inclusive political landscape where women contribute meaningfully to governance and nation-building.
