GBV in Lagos

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has taken a significant step to address GBV in Lagos by engaging 16 traditional rulers to close advocacy gaps in communities. This initiative coincides with the 16 Days of Activism to Eliminate Gender-Based Violence, an international campaign running from November 25 to December 10, 2024.

Leveraging Community Leadership to Combat GBV in Lagos

Traditional rulers are central to this advocacy effort. Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of DSVA, explained during the flag-off event at the Oniwaya of Iwaya Palace in Yaba that the agency aims to use these leaders’ influence to amplify awareness and action against GBV in Lagos.

The DSVA has partnered with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme, supported by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA, to ensure the campaign reaches underserved areas. These areas were identified based on data showing high prevalence rates of violence, low reporting, and a lack of prior engagement.

Spotlighting Traditional Rulers in Lagos

This campaign not only raises awareness but also highlights the efforts of traditional rulers in addressing GBV in Lagos. The selected rulers are recognized for their dedication to protecting their communities and supporting survivors of gender-based violence.

Oba Suleiman Owolabi Oloko, the Oniwaya of Iwaya Kingdom, expressed his gratitude for being chosen as the starting point for this critical campaign. He praised the state government and its partners for focusing on grassroots solutions to a pervasive issue.

Data-Driven Advocacy for Lasting Impact

Mrs. Vivour-Adeniyi emphasized that the agency’s reliance on data ensures that advocacy efforts are targeted and effective. The engagement of traditional rulers is a strategic move to bridge the gap between policy initiatives and community-level action, addressing GBV in Lagos where it is most prevalent.

Conclusion

The DSVA’s collaboration with traditional rulers reflects a vital commitment to ending GBV in Lagos. These efforts, supported by data-driven strategies and international partnerships, are paving the way for safer and more informed communities.
