ADHERI

The Advocates for Health and Rights of Women and Youths Initiative (ADHERI) recently launched a new Gender-Based Violence (GBV) policy in Lagos aimed at uniting efforts to eradicate violence. Held at Alliance Française, Ikoyi, the event featured prominent speakers who underscored the urgency of collaboration to create a safer and more inclusive society.

Youth at the Forefront of Change

The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, emphasized the need to prioritize youth involvement in shaping policies. With over 60% of Nigerians under 25, Ogunlende, represented by Zainab Aderounmu, highlighted how inclusive policies that focus on education, entrepreneurship, and mentorship are critical to future development. He pointed to the Nigerian Startup Act of 2022 as an example of how youth-centered initiatives can drive innovation and economic progress.

Confronting the Bystander Syndrome

Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, delivered a compelling speech on the dangers of bystander inaction. She called for the public to be proactive in addressing gender-based violence, introducing initiatives like the Virtual Response Team (VRS) and 24/7 helpline for survivors. These services are designed to offer immediate support and protection, reinforcing the importance of early intervention.

The Power of the Arts in Shaping Society

Bolanle Adekoya, Inclusion and Diversity Leader at PwC Africa, spoke on the role of the arts in societal transformation. She emphasized how storytelling, visual art, and cultural representation can challenge harmful gender norms and foster national unity. Harry Kesiena from the British Council echoed this sentiment, highlighting how platforms like Film Lab Africa empower young artists to use their voices for social change.

Honoring GBV Advocates

The event concluded with a special plaque presentation to stakeholders for their efforts in combating GBV. An art exhibition featuring works from 10 artists offered a powerful visual message advocating for gender equality and social reform.
