A Better Tomorrow: Rotary on Maternal, Child Health

Rotary International District 9127 has made a big promise. They want to help stop polio and take care of mothers and babies all over Nigeria. This is called helping with maternal, child health.

The new leader, Dame Joy Okoro, shared this promise during a special event in Abuja. She became the new District Governor, taking over from Mr. Mike Nwagoshiri. She will be in charge from July 1 to June 30, 2026.

Dame Joy said Rotary has been working very hard to stop polio all over the world. Now, only two countries still have the disease. She said her top goals are:

  • Helping mothers and children live healthier lives

  • Helping widows feel strong and supported.

  • Ending polio completely

She said, “Every mother and every child should have the chance to be healthy and happy.”

Projects to Help People

Dame Joy wants to do helpful things like:

  • Giving mothers clean places to have their babies

  • Helping children go to school and stay healthy

  • Giving widows help and respect so they can take care of their families

She said this is not just about giving gifts. It’s about fairness, care, and helping the whole community grow. To stop polio, Rotary will talk to people in different towns and work with health workers. They will also train nurses and doctors to keep giving vaccines. In the past, Dame Joy gave special delivery kits to over 100 pregnant women in Masaka, Nasarawa. She also helped some women who needed surgery when having their babies.

Many People Say Thank You

Governor Caleb Muftwang from Plateau State came to the event. He said Rotary is doing great work to help people and thanked them for giving clean water and healthcare to those who need it.

He said, “Being a good neighbor means helping people in need.” and said the government needs help from groups like Rotary because the government can’t do everything alone. Another Rotary leader, Mrs. Ijeoma Okoro, told Dame Joy to work hard to stop polio in District 9127. Some places still have a few cases, like Maiduguri, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Katsina. She said Rotary must keep working until there are no more polio cases at all.
